The Day the Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt

Hi there! It's Emily again. Today I'm doing a short review of one of my most favourite books ever. It is called "The Day the Crayons Quit" and was written by Drew Daywalt. 

I enjoyed the book, because it had crayons writing letters to a boy called Duncan, and they were complaining about how he is using them. My most favourite letter is this one:


Hey Duncan,   

It’s me, peach crayon. Why did you peel off my paper wrapping? Now I’m NAKED and too embarrassed to leave the crayon box. I don’t even have any underwear! How would you like to go to school naked? I need some clothes. HELP!

I think the author has a super imagination, as he talks about crayons which can think and write. The fantastic illustrations by Oliver Jeffers make the story even better. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves silly stories and for boys and girls up to the age of 12. I have read this book about 15 times and find it very interesting, and most of all VERY FUNNY!

Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (Real Reads)

Hello my name is Jasmin and I am 10 years old. Today I will be doing a book review of Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen.

We visited the Jane Austen Centre in Bath which is where I found out about these books. If you want to find out more about the Jane Austen Centre, have a link at their website.

This is my first book review of a book by Jane Austen, so I will tell you a few facts about her. Jane Austen visited Bath as a young woman. Northhanger Abbey is Jane Austen’s earliest major novel  but it was only published after her death. Jane Austen was born on the 16 December 1775 in Steventon and she died on 18 July 1817 in Winchester. Jane Austen grew up with 7 siblings. She published her first book on October 1811, this book was called Sense and Sensibility.

Northanger Abbey is about Catherine Morland, and she visits the Tilney’s house because in Bath she saw Henry Tilney and they fell in love. So Henry invited Catherine to stay at their house and she finds out that their mother has died, but because she has read so many books, she starts to suspect that Henry’s father has killed Henry’s mother. At the end, Catherine marries Henry, who is the person she wants to marry.

My favourite character is Catherine Morland, because she is the heroine of this story and she reads lots of books like me.

The characters in this book are Catherine Morland , James Morland, John Thorpe, Isabella Thorpe, Henry Tilney, Eleanor Tilney and General Tilney (Henry’s father).

I would recommend this book to ages 9 or above, because it is hard to understand what is happening in the book because it uses difficult vocabulary.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book - and there are 5 more books in this series. This book is part of the "Real Reads" series which are specially designed for children to read classic novels in a way that is easier to understand.

Gangsta Granny by David Walliams

Hi, it's Emily again. Today I am reviewing the book Gangsta Granny by David Walliams.

At the beginning Ben seems to think that granny is boring and smells of cabbage but what he doesn’t know is that she is more than that. Granny’s hobby is Scrabble, but Ben thinks it’s boring. His Mum and dad’s hobby is watching Strictly Come Dancing.

The characters are Queen Elizabeth,Gangsta Granny,Ben and Ben’s Mum and Dad.

My favourite character is Gangsta Granny because she is the main character and is surprisingly sneaky and an international jewel thief.

My favourite part of the story is when Gangsta granny and Ben got caught by Queen Elizabeth while stealing the crown jewels, because it sounds like it is going to be the end of Ben and Gangsta Granny.

I wouldn't recommend this to any pet because they might eat it; instead I would recommend it to 7 to 10 year olds, and both boys and girls because it is an adventure.

Code it Cody

Hi I'm Emily. I'm eight years old. Today, I am reviewing Code it Cody, which is part of a story book series by Clever Tykes, illustrated by Sam Moore.

Cody is a computer fixing expert although he has hearing problems so he has to wear hearing aids. When Brad’s computer  isn’t working Cody tries to fix it: it says ERROR CODE 2.357JKR. He thought that the computer was going to work and he was disappointed.

After that the teacher asked Cody if he could get Mr Chip. Cody thought Mr Chip was a robot who wants to eat his hearing aids. He knocked on the door and when he came in he saw loads of broken computers with wires sticking out.

As Cody walked into Mr Chip's office he heard a voice echoing down a path which he walked through and saw Mr Chip: he was a human who had a beard, glasses, a tie and a rectangular face. After school, Cody  went to after school club run by Mr Chip and met a girl who was shy and was very good at fixing computers as well.

At the end Miss Green keeps on playing video games  and some of the teachers had to wrestle it away from her. 

The World's Worst Children 2

Hi, my name is Jasmin and I am 9 years old. Today I will be doing a review of a book called "The Worlds Worst Children 2" by David Walliams.

My favourite story in Worlds Worst Children 2 is Fussy Frankie as it is very funny when the vegetables come to life.

The main characters in Fussy Frankie are Frankie.

The most funny story was Spoiled Brad because he fell into his colossal cake on his birthday.

Cruel Clarissa is about a girl who hates cats.

Competitive Colin is about a boy called Colin who wants to win at everything so he cheats to win the Olympics.

Humbert the hungry baby is about a baby who eats everything and he grows really big.

I really liked this book and I think that anyone between 7-12 years old would really enjoy reading it, too.

AniMalcolm book review

Hi, we are Jasmin (nine years old) and Emily (eight years old), and today we will be doing a review of a book called AniMalcolm by David Baddiel.

It is a very good book and we enjoyed it very much. It is a good book for boys and girls.

The main character is Malcolm. He is ten years old.

All the people in Malcolm’s family (Malcolm’s mum, dad and sister) are animal crazy except for Malcolm who does not like animals at all. Malcolm’s mum is a vet.

Malcolm did not get what he asked for on his birthday. He wanted a computer (a FYZ Apache 321 computer)  but instead got a chinchilla. He probably felt disappointed because he was really looking forward to having a computer. Malcolm was angry and frustrated when on his birthday his parents did not give him the present he wanted.

My funniest part is when Malcolm gets monkey poo all over him. He was a lot younger and he was visiting the zoo with his Granddad and his family. They were laughing with him because he was covered in monkey Poo.

Malcolm did not want go on the year six trip,v which was to the farm because he does not like animals.  His parents wanted him to go on the trip so he could learn more about animals and to like them more.

On the school trip to the farm he meets K-pax, who is a magical goat and who was rescued from the Himalayas. He is wise and powerful. When Malcolm asked K-pax a question he turned Malcolm into an animal. Malcolm meets Benny and Bjornita who are his tortoise friends when he turns into an animal.

Malcolm’s parents feel sad and depressed when they find out Malcolm is missing and they search the farm for him. They cannot find him because he is an animal.

When Malcolm is trying to get home (when he is a pigeon) he is surprised to find out that his chinchilla speaks Spanish (español) and Malcolm is surprised and wonders why he speaks that language instead of English.

Malcolm’s mum and dad take him to the vets (he is a Chinchilla). When Malcolm turns back into a boy he is laying on an operating table at the vets. They were shocked and surprised to see him there.

When Malcolm turns back into a boy he likes animals more than he did before as he knows what life is really like as an animal. One year after Malcolm turned back into a boy, the next year six went to the farm for a trip - we don’t know what happened next ...

Praxx and the Ringing Robot

Praxx and the ringing Robot

Hi I'm Emily. I'm eight years old. I have been asked by Paul Ian Cross to review his book.

Who are the main characters?

The main characters are Praxx and Zobott

Where do they live?

They live on the planet of Ekkadora

   

What happens in the story?

Praxx doesn't do his jobs in fact he lets Zobott do it and he makes a mess then Praxx cleans it with Zobott and the house is spotless.

What is your favourite part of  the story?

My most favourite part is when Praxx's mum finds a worm in her handbag because Zobott had tidied it in there.

How would you change the ending?

Instead of the ending being the house was spotless he put his things on his messy bed.

Goth Girl and the Ghost of a Mouse

Hi my name is Jasmin and I am nine years old. Today I will be doing a review of of a book called Goth Girl and the ghost of a mouse and it is by Chris Riddell.

I chose to review this book because it looked like an interesting book and because I have not read/reviewed any of the Goth Girl books. I would like to read another Goth Girl book. It has detailed and awe-inspiring illustrations in it.

The main characters are Goth Girl [Ada] , Lord Goth [Ada’s dad] and Ishmael [a dead mouse].

Ishmael [a dead mouse ] is very cheeky and mischievous and likes exploring.

My favourite character is Goth Girl [Ada] because she likes exploring like me and because Goth Girl is very mischievous.

The book is about Goth Girl [Ada] and she finds a dead mouse called Ishmael and they go on an adventure and find a person called the polar explorer and they find out that Maltravers is up to something.

My least favourite character is Maltravers because he is scary and likes capturing animals for other people to hunt.

My favourite bit of the story was when Goth Girl saved the siren sesta , the fawn and the goat from Maltravers because I like animals.

I would recommend this book because it is very interesting , exciting and uses a wide variety of description.

Goth Girl has to wear big clumpy boots because Goth Girl’s mum[Goth Girl’s mum was a tightrope walker] died so her dad doesn’t want Goth Girl to die like Goth Girl’s mum did.

If I could write the ending for this I would write that Ishmael [a dead mouse] stayed with Goth Girl forever and looked after Goth Girl [Ada].

This book took me one hour to read because it is a very short book and when I like a book I read it quickly.

I liked the book so much I am saving up to get another Goth Girl book.

Dork Diaries book review

In our house we love reading and our current favourite series is "Dork Diaries".

Here is my Dork Diaries book review to let you know what I think of it.

Nikki Maxwell lost her diary! Since starting at her new school Nikki has filled the diary with all her secrets and if the wrong person finds it her life will be over! So the hunt is on to track it down before anyone else does…have you ever lost anything like Nikki Maxwell did?

My most favorite character is Nikki Maxwell because she is kind to others and even though she is bullied by Mackenzie she helps others in need of her help.

I did not like it when someone stole Nikki Maxwell’s diary. Who could have stolen Nikki Maxwell’s diary?

I found it interesting when Nikki Maxwell wrote a letter to herself it was funny when Nikki Maxwell popped out of a actual birthday cake on her birthday.

I would change the ending by saying a dog got the diary and then the quest began to retrieve the diary.

One Third Stories: Friendly Mermaids and Snotty Dinosaurs

Hi! It's Emily again, and today I am doing a bilingual book review of a book that is in two languages at the same time.

What is the book called? 
The great Français word search

Who is your favourite character and why?
My favourite character is the mermaid (la sirène), because she is beautiful and I want to be a mermaid so it makes me want to be in the story.

What do you like about the book and why?
I liked the bit when the girl (la fille) meets the woman (la femme) because she uses a paintbrush to paint the woman (la femme) so she had some colour.

What do you not like about the book and why?
I didn’t like the bit when the dinosaur (le dinosaure) was snotty because I don’t like green slimy snot.

Why is this book special?
It is special because it’s in French and English and not many books are in French and English.

It would be even better if …
It would be even better if the witch (la sorcière), stole her words and she hid the words at the circus (le cirque).

I thought it was really clever how the book started out completely in English and then introduced more and more French words.
